Alternative pathways to graduation
Some students have difficulty achieving their full potential in a regular secondary school environment. All secondary schools offer on-site support for students in grades 8-10 who require extra behavioural or organizational support. In addition, the district offers a variety of alternative secondary programs suited to specific learners.
Alouette River Campus (ARC)
This program is designed for youth aged 12 to 15 years, who have not been successful in traditional educational environments. ARC has a high adult: youth ratio. Student programs are individualized and administered in an informal environment. Students usually remain in this program until they leave school. However, they may also be involved in work experience programs or return to a regular program if they demonstrate readiness.
Connex
Connex is a transitional part-time program for students aged 12 to 15 years, who have been out of school due to having a high degree of internalizing behaviour problems (e.g., anxiety, depression) that make it difficult for them to function in a regular setting. Connex has a high adult: youth ratio. Student programs are individualized and administered in an informal environment. Students typically attend school 3 hours per day, although teachers may also work with youth on an out-reach basis. Students are evaluated and with appropriate support may be able to return to a regular secondary school. (More information about Connex)
Parenting program
This program is attached to Maple Ridge Secondary school. Here students may individualize the pace of their learning to accommodate the demands of motherhood. While the mothers are in class, their babies are cared for at an on-site day care funded by the Ministry of Children and Families. Students also receive support and guidance in their role as mothers.
Outreach
The Outreach program is designed for students aged 15 to18 who wish to return to school in an effort to complete basic core subjects and, wherever possible, electives. The program operates Monday to Thursday from 1 to 7 PM with flexible attendance. Students must apply for entrance to the program through the Maple Ridge Secondary school outreach counsellor.
Virtual school
On-line learning opportunities provide options for students who might not otherwise be able to access them. The concept of the virtual school also includes possibilities for home schoolers and international students both in BC and abroad.
Greg Moore Youth Centre Educational Outreach
The GMYCEO Program enrolls students who are not attending/not registered in a regular school. Services will be provided until the youth is able to transition to a long-term program. The program is geared toward students aged 15 through 18 years. Older and younger students are considered on an individual basis. (more information about GMYCEO)
