Located an hour's drive east of Vancouver, the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows enjoy easy access to Vancouver's many attractions combined with a tranquil setting and small town atmosphere. The two municipalities share a combined population of just over 90,000 residents. A network of health, social and emergency facilities and services are locally available, including a modern hospital, extended care facilities, social service agencies, and police, fire, and ambulance services.
The area's industrial roots lie in agriculture, fisheries, forestry and mining and its primary industries still reflect this history. Pitt Meadows is known for its berry fields and dairy farms, while Maple Ridge is a major centre for horse breeding. Two wood processing companies account for more than one third of the region's manufacturing work force. Many of the region's residents commute to work in other communities, but rapid commercial growth and business startups are creating more employment opportunities locally. Three major bridge projects will have a huge impact on the region's transportation links and Pitt Meadows airport continues to grow as a hub for short-haul commercial and commuter flights.
The region is a gateway to some of BC's most spectacular wilderness including Golden Ears Park. Parks, trails and dike systems offer boundless opportunities for hiking, biking, canoeing, as well as camping and fishing. A network of over 20 miles of equestrian trails offers ample space for the region's many horse lovers. Abundant bird and wildlife populations thrive in the nearby waterways and in the nearby Reibolt Bird Sanctuary. Avid golfers will find several challenging courses located in these stunning surroundings.
