TORCH RELAY ARRIVES FEB 8

Maple Ridge 6:15 – 8:00 am
The celebration will be held in Spirit Square at Memorial Peace Park, 11995 Haney Place, Maple Ridge. Be prepared to walk or bike to the celebration site as parking will be limited. Join us in wearing red and white to show the world that Maple Ridge is “RED-dy”!

Entertainment will feature active opportunities such as a mini torch run for kids and interactive sport opportunities. Muffins, fruit and warm refreshments will be provided. Official ceremonies will include the Spirit of Wood unveiling, O’ Canada, a flag raising ceremony, and introduction to some of our Home Town Hero athletes and the highlight will be when the Olympic Torch joins our celebration.

The Torch Relay route
The Olympic torch leaves the intersection of 116 Avenue and Lougheed Highway (by Telosky Stadium) at 7:05 am, travels uphill along Lougheed Highway to 227 Street, northbound along 227 Street to Dewdney Trunk Road, westbound along Dewdney Trunk Road to 224 Street and southbound on 224 Street to Memorial Peace Park into Bandstand for official ceremonies. It will arrive at approximately 7:20 am.

The Olympic torch leaves Memorial Peace Park and travels southbound down 224 Street to Lougheed Highway and westbound along Lougheed Hwy to Maple Meadows Way (estimated time of arrival is 8:13 am). There will be no runners beyond this point. The convoy will proceed along Lougheed Highway to Harris Road and McMyn in Pitt Meadows.

Temporary road closures will be in effect throughout the route. These are rolling closures, which are set up approximately 10-15 minutes ahead of the convey and then lifted after the convey has gone by. Closures will affect the westbound lanes of Lougheed and Dewdney and northbound lanes of 227 St. and southbound lanes of 224 St.

 

Pitt Meadows 7:00 - 9:00 am
The celebration will be held in Spirit Square at the Pitt Meadows Civic Complex (Library, Family Rec Centre, City Hall)-12007 Harris Road. Festivities include activities, goodies and warm refreshments kick along with live entertainment, official ceremonies, the Spirit of Wood unveiling and a mini kids torch run. Lots of give-aways. Be prepared to walk or bike to the celebration site as parking will be limited and remember wear red and white and show off to the world all the best that Pitt Meadows has to offer.

The Torch Relay route
The Olympic torch leaves Harris Road and McMyn at 8:16 am and travels south to Spirit Square at the Pitt Meadows Civic Complex for the official ceremonies, arriving at approximately 8:20 am. It then continues south on Harris and then east on Hammond Rd up to Herring Place, arriving at 8:40 am. There will be no runners beyond this point.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games site includes various resources and activities for teachers and students. These can be found at vancouver2010.com/EDU Index of Teacher Resources and can be shared  through the /EDU Project Showcase.

Teachers can receive a certificate of thanks for submitting classroom projects, and will be entered to win a special grand prize to share with the entire school. Prizes include items that can be displayed in school cabinets, such as a replica 2010 Olympic Torch with stand, a genuine inukshuk carved by an Inuit artist and a set of official Vancouver 2010 posters.

ART CONTEST

Help celebrate the arrival of the Olympic Torch Relay, and win prizes, by creating your own Olympic-themed artwork.

Theme - Your artwork can be anything related to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics

Material
- Any size or medium is acceptable as long as it can be easily displayed

Prizes
- The local Olympic Torch Relay committee will provide a variety of Olympic give-aways as prizes. In addition, parks and Lesiure Services is offering a grand prize of a three-month Family Admission to its Recreation Facilities.

Display
- Artwork will be displayed at the municipal halls and recreation centres in both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

PAINT THE TOWN RED CAMPAIGN

The Canadian Olympic Committee has launched a Paint the Town Red School Kit of materials as part of The Canadian Olympic School Program presented by RBC. Teachers and students across the country can join in the excitement of preparing for the Games and cheering on Canada’s Olympic Team.
